I am counsel at the BrownWinick law firm. I provide direct, pragmatic advice and counsel to employers, helping your business—regardless of size—navigate the ever-changing landscape of local, state, and federal labor and employment laws. I can also assist your business with internal investigations touching on harassment, discrimination, or any other compliance issue. I am a trial lawyer at heart, so when employment relationships become labor or employment disputes, I will provide you and your business with a robust and relentless defense against any claim. When you work with me, whether it’s in your day-to-day operations, responding to a threatened claim or government investigation, or when we’re in front of an administrative body or the state or federal district or appellate courts, you will get the advice, counsel, and representation you need to make decisions and act to advance and protect your business.

My Approach

I rely on my diverse background, which includes the many years I spent as a trial lawyer with the most successful plaintiff’s labor and employment litigation firms in the state, and the time I spent as an Assistant United States Attorney, investigating and litigating a variety of fraud and civil rights cases under an affirmative civil enforcement program. This background provides me with a keen eye for spotting potential claims, or a need to adjust existing practices, and the ability to provide actionable advice to move your business forward. When it comes to litigation, I know what to expect from an adversary and will use that knowledge to strengthen your defense.

More About Me

I am an Iowa native and have lived in central Iowa my entire life. Like many Iowans, I was raised to value hard work, commitment, and candor.

Before going to law school, I worked in information technology and systems administration for a high-tech venture in West Des Moines. In 2009, I graduated from Upper Iowa University with a B.S. in Public Administration with an emphasis in law enforcement. In 2013, I earned my law degree from Drake University Law School, with high honors, and completed certificates in health law and litigation and dispute resolution. After graduation, I was admitted to the Iowa bar, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, and recently the U.S District Court for the District of Nebraska.

Since 2019, I have been recognized by Best Lawyers for my employment litigation practice. I am currently the chair of the Litigation Section of the Iowa State Bar Association and the Litigation Section’s Legislative Committee, and I am a member of the Litigation Section Council and the Labor and Employment Law Section Council. I previously served as a grader for the Iowa Board of Law Examiners.

I strive to give back to my community. I am currently serving as the chair of the Clive Library Board, as a member of the Iowa Landscape Architectural Examining Board, and as a board member for the Johnston Urbandale Soccer Club.
