Specialties

I'm a member  in the BrownWinick law firm. I'm a business attorney and trusted advisor helping people, businesses and organizations navigate legal and business issues to achieve their goals. Depending on the situation, I may be next to you in the boardroom, meeting with the other side's lawyer one on one, or leading a team of BrownWinick colleagues from beginning to end on a complex transaction. As an attorney who has worked in industries, owned and operated my own businesses in addition to my legal practice, I go beyond the “traditional” or “cookie-cutter” role of an attorney to bring you the creativity, perspective, and practical mindset you need to your achieve your goals.

My Approach

I believe that a results-oriented and business-first approach best serves my clients. I have found that clients are seeking a partner who listens, understands, and develops solutions to get the desired results balancing legal risks with real world considerations that every client must consider which are often overlooked or under appreciated by attorneys.  The best lawyer is the one who understands your business and someone you understand.

More About Me

Before joining BrownWinick, I worked fifteen years with an international Fortune 10 corporation in various management positions. I later owned and operated several small businesses, making many of the same business and legal decisions I now help clients with. Legal issues aren't theoretical to me; they're real issues that we roll up our sleeves to solve. I know the pressures of meeting quarterly financials while building long-term shareholder value.

I am involved in federal and state elections and campaign compliance. I advise candidates and candidate committees, connected and non-connected PACs, SuperPACs, 527 organizations, and advocacy groups on legal compliance matters in state and local elections. These would include presidential elections, congressional and senatorial races, governor, and state offices in Iowa and other states.

I graduated in 1976 from the University of Notre Dame with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and in 1979 from the University of Chicago with an MBA, with a concentration in finance. I received my J.D. from Drake University, and I was admitted to the Iowa bar in 2002.

I currently serve as the Executive Director for the Federation of Iowa Insurers (FII), which is the state trade association for Iowa's life insurers, annuity and financial service industries, and the health and managed care organizations. I have also served in community and business organizations, including the Des Moines Downtown Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Des Moines Partnership in the Business Resources and Community Development Board, the Dowling Catholic Foundation, and the Holy Family School Foundation.
