BrownWinick’s first quarterly charity project of 2019 benefited Joppa. Joppa is a local organization helping homeless people survive, find housing and rebuild their lives.
Throughout the months of January and February, BrownWinick collected winter survival items, such as gloves, coats, hand/foot warmers, tarps and sleeping bags, and everyday personal items, such as toilet paper, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner and soap. Along with collection of items, BrownWinick held a jeans day fundraiser for Joppa on Friday, January 25, 2019.
Joppa is a local organization helping homeless people survive, find housing and rebuild their lives. 1,000 people are homeless each day in Central Iowa. Around 350 of these people can find relief in transitional housing and another 400 can find a bed at one of the 11 emergency shelters. That leaves about 250 men and women with literally no options each night!
Joppa collaborates with other agencies, helps people access resources, and develops unique programs that fill gaps and meet unmet needs in outreach, housing and education. Joppa has helped 360 individuals get off the streets since 2008 and more than 86% of these men, women, and children remain in housing.
Our mission is to create communities of unconditional love, support, and hope for the homeless, as we work together to prevent and ultimately end homelessness.
We collaborate with families, individuals, churches, corporations, and others to help homeless people access existing resources, and we mobilize private donations to meet unmet needs in Homeless Services, Housing, and Education.
Each week, trained volunteers visit on average 194 people living under bridges, in tents, vehicles, and recently off the streets. We build relationships and check in on people, provide food, water, TP, and other necessities, as well as referrals and offers to help people overcome specific obstacles, find housing, and get back on their feet.
Joppa is also developing fundamental solutions to homelessness such as transitional Tiny Home Villages, permanent Cottage Homes, and Joppa KIDS—an education program working to prevent homelessness in future generations.
Joppa does not receive ongoing state or federal funding. But thanks to your continued support, we’ve helped more than 400 homeless individuals and families get off the streets, over 80% of whom remain in housing today.
