Reminder On Upcoming Deadlines For Filing Income Tax Returns And Paying Income Tax

Because of the ongoing pandemic, several due dates for filing tax returns and paying tax related thereto have been extended. Click here for details. This is a reminder of certain upcoming filing and payment deadlines for both the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Iowa Department of Revenue (IDOR). Please see the following table and links therein to further detail.

 

When are 2019 income tax returns due?

Federal (IRS)

July 15, 2020 (and the IRS announced that this deadline will NOT be further extended; however, you can extend the filing of the return, but NOT payment of tax, to October 15 by filing an extension – click here for more detail)

Iowa (IDOR)

July 31, 2020 (but if 90% of the tax liability is paid by July 31, the return is not due until January 31, 2021 – click here for more detail)

When are 2019 income tax payments due?

Federal (IRS)

July 15, 2020 (no extension to pay, only to file)

Iowa (IDOR)

July 31, 2020 (no extension to pay, only to file)

When are 2020 estimated income tax payments due?

 

Federal (IRS)

July 15, 2020 for both the 1st and 2nd quarters (as of now, normal September 15 due date for the 3rd quarter)

Iowa (IDOR)

Normal due dates, no relief due to COVID-19 – that is, April 30, June 30, and September 30, 2020 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters, respectively, although there is certain relief from penalties as further explained here.
