I am a member in the BrownWinick law firm and Chair of the BrownWinick Employment Law Practice Group. I represent clients across a variety of industries from technology to manufacturing to agriculture and I partner with employers of all sizes to find solutions to their workforce-related challenges. From policy development, harassment, drug testing and FMLA consulting and training, non-compete and restrictive covenant drafting and enforcement to business visas, immigration compliance and workers’ compensation, no two days in my practice look alike. Intellectual curiosity drives me to continuously develop more creative and efficient ways to solve complex legal problems and to better serve my clients.

My Approach

Every report of harassment is an opportunity for your business to improve. Every complex medical return to work situation or business visa conundrum is an opportunity to foster a better connection with your employee and develop legal strategies that actually work for your business. From assessing liability, training your employees and fighting to protect your confidential and trade secret information, it is important to me that my clients leave our conversations with a risk assessment, sound advice and a game plan for the future.

I am committed to helping employers better manage their workforce through thoughtful compliance with employment and immigration laws and if I don’t have specific expertise in the area you require, there is a very good chance that one of my BrownWinick Employment Law Practice Group members has that expertise. I work collaboratively with my team to get my clients the advice they need.

More About Me

Maintaining connections with other practitioners in my profession helps me stay on top of the latest developments in my practice. I am a member of the American Immigration Lawyer’s Association and the Iowa State Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section. I am also a member of the Iowa Association of Workers’ Compensation Lawyers and the Polk County Bar Association. I also serve as an editor of the Iowa Human Resource Manual.

I have been recognized by Chambers USA®  for my work in Labor & Employment law, have been selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America® for my work in Workers’ Compensation law and Super Lawyers® in the area of  Labor and Employment Law.

My community work is focused on mental health and advocating for improved conditions for women and girls across the State of Iowa. I serve as the current Chair of the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women and as a member of the Board for the Iowa Department of Human Rights.  I serve as a member of the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center Board of Directors, a member of the House of Mercy Board of Directors and a member of the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s Talent Development Board.  I also currently serve on the Iowa Center for Economic Success Strategic Advisory Committee. In prior years, I served as the President of the Board of Directors for the Young Women’s Resource Center, served on the Board of Governors for the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute and was the Strategic Planning Director and Fund Development Director for the Junior League of Des Moines. I also helped raise community awareness regarding mental health issues serving on the Broadlawns Advocacy Circle.

I received my  B.A. in Political Science and B.A. in International Studies from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I graduated from Drake University Law School, with honors, in 2002, where I was an editor of the Drake University Journal of Agricultural Law and served on the Moot Court Board. I currently serve on the Drake University Law School Board of Counselors.

I was admitted to the Iowa bar in 2002 and am currently admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa and the United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Before joining BrownWinick in 2005, I practiced exclusively as a litigator with an insurance defense law firm.
